Children Are The Best Teachers

One of my favorite things to do in the summer is walk/run the Spring Lake boardwalk in the evening.  Mia seems to love it just as much as I do.

As we pass all different type of people, my daughter waves, smiles and say’s “hi” to Every.Single.Person.  It is adorable and in return we receive smiles, laughs and waves back.

The other evening, we were walking and she was waving and I thought to myself I need to be more like her and so does most of the adult world.

We then stopped at a park on the beach to play and Mia met a little boy there. They immediately started to play and were having a blast together.  I decided to introduce myself to his mom and we ended up having an hour long conversation.  Turn’s out we actually had a lot in common and were struggling with similar things.   It felt so good to talk to another mom who could relate to what I was experiencing. I can’t speak for her, but I got the sense she felt the same way.

We exchanged numbers and are planning another play date soon.  I’m so glad I stepped out of my comfort zone and just said those simple words “hi”. Now both Mia and myself have a new friend.

Isn’t it true that we can become so wrapped up in our own busy lives that we forget to actually interact with one another? Instead of talking to each other we scroll through Facebook or Instagram constantly checking to see how many people just “liked” our last post.  I am totally guilty of this.

Don’t get me wrong, I love Facebook. Social Media has allowed me the opportunity to build incredible relationships with  people that I never would have met otherwise. However,  it really can’t replace having a cup of coffee with a friend and talking out “life” with them.  Or, making fun memories together.  It’s all about finding a healthy balance, it’s something I personally am working on.

So the take away point is:  Put down your phone, take out your ear phones and talk to a stranger.  You never know, you might just gain an unexpected friend.
